Other names
Other names for the Siberian tiger Panthera tigris altaica are white, Amur, Manchurian, Altaic and Ussuri tiger. Siberian tigers live about 15 years, in contrast to the captives, who have a shorter time. They can survive severe frost. Although male tiger fighting hard for its territory, it would not hurt a female with cubs intruders. Their diet consists mainly of wild boar, wild cattle and several species of deer.
Adaptations
They live in a climate where winter can get snow and cold penetrates. To begin with, the Siberian tiger an extra layer of fat in the body to insulate the cold. It also has a very thick skin and foot. These physical adaptations help the Siberian tiger survive the harsh winters. Furthermore, these tigers are good hunters, who can break down larger animals than themselves. The hind legs are longer than its front legs, which is an adaptation of the long jump.
Habitat
95% of the population in this tiger's coniferous, scrub oak and birch forests in Primorsky Krai region of Russia (Russian Far East). They are also found in China and North Korea, but in very small amounts, which is even more reduced. Additionally, every tiger needs of its territory to be an area up to 30 kilometers. Siberian tigers need much larger areas territories. These habitats are in some parts of India and Thailand. Conservation groups are working to create protected areas in the Russian Far East regions, and to find ways in which humans and tigers can coexist.
Population
This is probably the most important part of the Siberian tiger information. In 1940, the Siberian tiger is almost extinct. Only 40 tigers were abandoned. Fortunately, this brought the Russian government, and intensive efforts against poaching and other conservation, supported by WWF, have taken steps to save the tiger from extinction. Amur population has remained stable at around 450 since.
Unless factors such as deforestation, poaching, population de-fragmentation, etc., are kept under control by taking some serious action, we will lose these endangered tigers around. I hope this information is helpful and has helped me to better understand this magnificent animal.
